Lakeland Car Accident: 8 Calls, From Police to Chiropractor
After a car accident in Lakeland, the calls come in a rough order: emergency help, the police agency for where you crashed, your insurer, then a licensed provider such as a chiropractor. This list runs all eight, with the official number where we could confirm one. It is not ranked and it names no clinic or law firm.

1. 911, if anyone may be hurt
Call first, sort out everything else later. Loss of consciousness, a severe headache, chest pain, numbness or weakness all mean emergency care before any of the calls below.
2. The police agency for where you crashed
Fla. Stat. 316.065 sets the rule. When someone is hurt or killed, or damage looks like at least $2,000, the driver has to give notice right away: to the local police inside a city, otherwise to the county sheriff or the nearest Florida Highway Patrol station.
Inside city limits that is Lakeland Police, whose non-emergency line is 863-834-6900. Out on county roads it is the Polk County Sheriff's Office or FHP. Not sure which side of the line you are on? Tell the dispatcher your cross street and let them sort it out.
3. Your own auto insurer
The claims number is usually on your insurance card. Your PIP claim runs through your own policy no matter who caused the crash, and policies set their own terms for how soon they want to hear from you, so check yours. Our step-by-step guide for the first week covers the paperwork.
4. A licensed chiropractor or other provider, inside 14 days
Fla. Stat. 627.736 ties PIP medical benefits to getting initial care within 14 days of the crash. The providers it names include physicians, dentists, advanced practice registered nurses, hospitals and chiropractic physicians licensed under chapter 460, so a chiropractor after a car accident in Lakeland can count as that first visit.
Before you book, search the name on the Florida Department of Health license portal. Pick Chiropractic Physician, then confirm the license is active. The portal is the authority on license status.
Where the crash happened does not limit where you go, though coverage and network rules can vary by policy. The 14-day rule guide has how the days are counted.
5. A provider who can make the emergency medical condition call
Under the same statute, PIP reimburses up to $10,000 if a physician, dentist, physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse determines you had an emergency medical condition, and it is limited to $2,500 if a provider determines you did not. A chiropractor is not on that list, so ask any clinic how that evaluation gets done and by whom.
6. The records office, for your crash report
Crash reports go through the state crash portal, and Lakeland Police Records handles the ones written by that department. Fla. Stat. 316.066 keeps reports confidential for 60 days after filing, with access for the people in the crash, their lawyers and their insurers, so expect to confirm you are one of them.
7. The state insurance helpline, if a claim stalls
The Florida Department of Financial Services runs an Insurance Consumer Helpline at 1-877-693-5236. Its staff take complaints about insurers, including trouble settling a claim.
8. The Florida Bar referral line, if you have a legal question
We don't rank or recommend lawyers. The Florida Bar Lawyer Referral Service is at 800-342-8011, weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the Bar says its regular panel lawyers give a half-hour office consultation for no more than $25. Tell whoever you speak with your crash date, because Florida deadlines run from it.
One call you can skip
A stranger who phones days after your crash offering help with a claim. Fla. Stat. 817.234(8) bars soliciting a person involved in a motor vehicle accident for tort or PIP claims within 60 days, by any means other than advertising directed to the public. This site is that kind of advertising and may receive compensation from participating providers. You can choose any provider.
Questions Lakeland callers ask about these calls
Do I have to call the police after a minor crash in Lakeland?
Florida's rule turns on the damage. Fla. Stat. 316.065 requires immediate notice when anyone is hurt or killed, or when damage looks like at least $2,000. Under $2,000 with no law enforcement report, 316.066 has the driver send a written report to the state within 10 days.
Does it matter that my crash was outside Lakeland city limits?
It changes who you call. The statute points to the local police inside a city and to the county sheriff or nearest Florida Highway Patrol station everywhere else, so a crash outside city limits normally goes to the Polk County Sheriff's Office or FHP.
Is a chiropractor allowed to be my first visit under PIP?
A chiropractic physician licensed under chapter 460 is one of the providers Fla. Stat. 627.736 names for initial services and care within 14 days. Whether a chiropractor is the right first stop for your injury is a medical question for a licensed provider, and anything that may be serious belongs at an emergency room.
